I must give credit to Gibson for making a risky movie after the Passion of the Christ, it took guts to make this film after The Passion of the Christ. Youngblood was sufficiently heroic, and Hernandez was sufficiently damsel in distress. The acting is fine it must have been difficult to learn the dialect they were speaking. Maybe the book is so clear in my mind because I read it so recently, or maybe Appocalypto really does draw inspiration from William Golding’s classic novel. In fact, the basic plotline of two tribes warring is the basic plotline of Lord of the Flies. I was struck how much two images from this movie reminded me of the book, The Lord of the Flies, the opening image and the closing image are both very reminiscent of the Lord of the Flies. This movie is a lot like Gladiator in a lot of respects, but it’s simplified to even more basic elements. Why did one tribe attack the other? Were the Mayans a warlike civilization? Is inter-tribal warfare the reason Gibson posits for the downfall of the Mayans? None of these questions are answered.įor all the uniqueness if the story (viewers don’t see a movie about warring Mayan tribes in Hollywood every day) after a certain point, it becomes very much like every other Hollywood action film, the hero of the film becomes invincible and the story becomes very predictable. Once again a little exposition would have done wonders to possibly explain all the violence. Coming on the heels of Gibson’s very violent version of the crucifixion one has to wonder what exactly was going through Mel Gibson’s mind at this time. The number of acts of violence, and the severity of the violence was just numbing after a while and it got in the way of the story. Can Jaguar Paw escape the ruthless tribe that captured him and razed his village? Can he rescue his wife and child from the rising water in the well?Īppocalypto was a fascinating and unusual look at the mores, culture and language of the Mayans, a civilization who occupied the Yucatan for over 1500 years. They take Jaguar’s Paw and a lot of his village hostage, and they don’t intend to keep these captives alive for very long. Before Jaguar Paw is taken away, he hides his wife Seven (Dalia Hernandez) and son Turtle’s Run (Carlos Baez) in a well. The chief of the one tribe is killed, and his son Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) is taken hostage. One tribe of Mayan warriors attacks another tribe.
